The American Mentor was an Afro-American Assassin and the Mentor of the American Brotherhood during the American Civil War. He was the grandson of Aveline de Grandpré, an Assassin from New Orleans.
In 1863, he travelled from Washington, D.C. to New York City, to instruct Varius to steal a dagger, part of the Trident of Eden, hidden in the Aztec Club in order to deliver it to General Ulysses S. Grant. The Mentor believed that with the powers of the artifact, Grant was the right man to ensure a victory for the Union States and bring an end to the civil war.
