"Youth is a state of mind!"
―Hilarus Maximus to Bayek, 48 BCE.[src]-[m]

Hilarus Maximus was a retired Greek gladiator who resided in Krokodilopolis, Egypt, during the 1st century BCE. A former arena champion, Hilarus took to brawling in the streets of the city despite his old age, to make a living.[1]

Biography

In his youth, Hilarus had his first sexual encounter at the top of the lighthouse of Krokodilopolis. It was an event he was fond of reminiscing, even in his older days, and one reason why he claimed to love the lighthouse. The other was that the view was breathtaking.[1]

In his prime, Hilarus was famous at the arena, becoming the favorite of Pompey, and named "The Camel of Hermes" by him.[1]

Around 48 BCE, Hilarus met the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, and decided to become his fighting teacher. Bayek agreed to help Hilarus fight his fights for the day, in return for the promise that Hilarus would look for another way to make a living afterwards.[1]

Over the course of this relationship, Hilarus had Bayek witness the the wonderful view from the top of the lighthouse. From there, they continued into a brothel, where the final fight of the day awaited.[1]

Afterwards, the brothel owner offered them a position as a bouncer at the brothel. Bayek declined, though Hilarus accepted, and the brothel owner approved of him.[1] Later, Bayek met Hilarus again, and it seemed the former gladiator was more than happy with his choice.[2]
