Hassan (died c. 860s), also known as Al-Azhdaha or The Doctor, was a member of the Order of the Ancients who worked at The Great Bimaristan as a doctor in Baghdad in the 9th century.

Biography

By the 860s, Hassan was a part of the Order of the Ancients, working under Order leader Fazil Fahim al-Kemsa, also known as Al-Rabisu. Under Fazil's instruction, he was ordered to oversee the worker at an excavation site, where he also collected any injured workers at his own patients to experiment. However, the workers found an ancient disk from the site and signs of an Isu vault. Working on the device Alruh to unravel the disk's mystery, he enrolled engineer Ahmad ibn Musa, a member of the Alamut Hidden Ones, to unwittingly aid him in the device's construction. Shockingly, neither scientist was unaware of the other's allegiance.[1]

Hassan informed ALof the last parts for their device Alruh arriving at the House of Wisdom. However, his plans were discovered by the Alamut Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, who was investigating the ruins and the disappearance of fellow Hidden One Ahmad. At the Great Bimaristan, Hassan left his mask and correspondence out in the open in his office while working in his private laboratory. Basim found this evidence and concluded Hassan's ties with the Order. Finding that one of his lab's window was broken, Basim entered into Hassan's lab and found him talking to himself. Quickly, Hassan was assassinated by Basim, who was later found by Ahmad. With Hassan's corpse besides them, Basim nearly accused of Ahmad working with the enemy but Ahmad admits of being too involved with his work. Both agreed to never mention this while Basim ordered Ahmad to return to the bureau.[1]

Behind the scenes

While Basim investigated the Scriptorium, he found that Hassan held romantic feelings for his fellow Order member Zahra as he wrote a love letter, containing a line from famous poet Arib Al-Ma'muniyya, "You are my law, You are my Order," for her.[2]
