A diving bell is a chamber lowered into the sea to allow divers to explore underwater for prolonged periods of time, as they can return to the bell which retains air from the surface for them to breathe.
History
In January 1718, the pirate captain and later Assassin Edward Kenway purchased a diving bell for his ship, the Jackdaw, which he used to explore the sunken Spanish Treasure Fleet in search of medicines for Nassau.[1] Throughout the rest of his time in the Caribbean, Edward made use of his diving bell to explore various shipwrecks and salvage their treasure.[2] Edward's last known use of his diving bell came in September 1722, when he explored the wreck of a Spanish ship, the Polvora, and rigged the bell with explosives to save his crew from Edward Low, who had taken them hostage.[3]
A decade later, in 1735, Edward's former quartermaster and fellow Assassin Adéwalé installed a diving bell on his own vessel, the Experto Crede. He used it to explore the shipwreck of the Jackdaw, which had sunk off the coast of Hispaniola, and successfully recovered its figurehead.[4]
In 2023, Abstergo Industries sent a diving bell ship to the Templar Shimazu Sei to allow her to recover a crescent amulet – a Piece of Eden – from the shipwreck of the SS Ourang Medan near the Strait of Malacca. Using the bell, Sei's bodyguard Yuki and Animus test subject Noa Kim descended to the shipwreck's location.[5]
