Prussia was a German state in central Europe. Originally a powerful constituent of the Holy Roman Empire, it unified the other German states in 1871 to establish the nation-state of Germany.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The Prussians were held in high regard for their weapon manufacturing, with the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze having owned a Prussian Longsword,[2] and the Colonial Templar Shay Cormac having owned a pair of German Wheellocks.[3] The state was also the homeland of famed astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.[4][5]

Early in his life, Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau was exiled to Prussia for criticizing French finance minister Charles Alexandre de Calonne.[6] In 1789, having returned to France, Mirabeau attempted to win the support of his father Victor de Riqueti for election to the Estates-General by dedicating a book about the Prussian monarchy to him.[7]

In April 1792, the revolutionary government of France, dominated by the Girondists, declared war on Prussia and Austria. With Prussia seemingly prevailing over France, the lawyer Maximilien de Robespierre was one of the first revolutionary leaders to criticize the war,[8] calling for the removal of King Louis XVI.[9] That same year, a Prussian and Austrian army under the command of the Duke of Brunswick attempted to attack Paris, although it was foiled by the French Assassin Arno Dorian, who sabotaged their communications.[10] During the war, a Prussian regiment led by the prince of Isenburg-Birstein, another German state,[11] fought alongside Napoleon Bonaparte.[12]

On 16 June 1815, Bonaparte defeated the Prussians at the Battle of Ligny in what would become his final victory. Two days later, at Waterloo, the British, reinforced by the Prussians, dealt him his legendary defeat.[13]
