Skoura (died 420s BCE) was the bouncer and a former champion of the Pephka Arena during the 5th century BCE in Pephka, Greece.

Biography

Friend of Maion through the "Greco-Persian Wars", the two established the Arena in Pephka after the fighting was done. For decades, the Arena drew fighters and crowds throughout Greece, with Maion serving as the public face while Skoura fought.[1]

After years of fighting in the Arena, Skoura had slain all his friends in honorable combat, becoming the "Hero of the Arena". When his daughter Anaia was born, he swore off the bloodshed, and withdrew from the action within the Arena's gates, refusing to even watch. With Anaia's death years before the Peloponnesian War Skoura withdrew even more, jaded and lacking purpose in life, just doing the only thing he knew how to do, sending out invitations to mercenaries and others who might be interested in the glory, fame, and drachmae the Arena could offer.[1]

Skoura met the Spartan misthios Kassandra when she arrived at the Arena at some point during the Peloponnesian War. Talking with her awoke something within him, and he even came to watch her match against Vasilis, the ruling "King of the Arena". Following her wins against all the ruling champions of the Arena, Skoura saw his opportunity for a glorious, honorable death at her hands. Donning his old armor and spear, Skoura faced Kassandra within the Arena, and lost.[2]
