Phoebe was the Oracle of Apollo serving in a sanctuary in the Green Mountains of Cyrenaica during the 1st century BCE.

Biography

During the mid-1st century BCE, Phoebe served as the Oracle for the Greek god Apollo in a sanctuary in Cyrenaica. As such, Phoebe was often visited by Cyrenaicans, who sought her out for blessings and prophecies.[1]

In 47 BCE, Phoebe was visited by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa whom she had predicted would come. Phoebe explained her visions that she had received from Apollo to Bayek, entrusting him to seek out the Halo of the Huntress, a relic belonging to the mythical huntress Cyrene.[1]

Trivia

  • Phoebe is a Greek name derived from the word φοιβος (phoibos), meaning 'bright, pure'. 
  • Phoebe is also the name of a goddess from classical mythology; her daughter was Leto and her grandchildren were Apollo and Artemis.
