I don't understand why you feel the need to keep making minor adjustments over and over again on the same articles. This sentence is concise already, and your revision I think takes away from the point that the Tokugawa shogunate designated their capital as Edo and that's how it superseded Kyoto

Kyoto (京都) and originally Heian-kyo (平安京), is a major city in Japan known for having served as its imperial capital for centuries since the Heian period. It was originally modelled after the Tang capital of Chang'an in China. It served as the seat of power for the Ashikaga shogunate from 1467 until 1573. With the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate, its prominence was superseded by that of the shogunate's capital, Edo. After its victory over the Tokugawa in Boshin War, the Imperial Court relocated to Edo, rechristening it as Tokyo, and making it the new national capital.[1]
