James of Crannach (c. 1270[1] - 1297) was a member of the Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins and the apprentice of Thomas of Balmerino who was trained alongside Fillan.

Biography

James joined the Brotherhood in 1295 as an apprentice to Thomas of Balmerino. In 1296, he met Fillan the day after he had arrived at Scone. In May 1297, James accompanied William Wallace to Lanark, where he encountered Fillan again on Lanarkshire after the battle of Scone, to assassinate William Heselrig, in which he and Wallace succeded in. He was later revealed to be the mole who was leaking intel to the Templars in the hope of joining the Templar Order.[1][2]
