The Isthmus of Poseidon, also called the Isthmus of Korinth, is a narrow strip of land, connecting the Peloponnese to mainland Greece, near the town of Korinth. It is also one of the regions of Korinthia.
History[edit | edit source]
The isthmus was home to the Isthmian Games as established by Sisyphos, the founder of Korinth, in honor and memory of Melikertes. An altar dedicated to Melikertes was part of the Games and the cult related to them.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War, the misthios Kassandra explored the area.[1]
Landmarks[edit | edit source]
Notable landmarks in the area include the Diolkos, the Grave of Sisyphos, and the Sanctuary of Isthmia.[1]
