The High Priest of Sekhmet was a position of the leader of the Temple of Sekhmet in Yamu, Egypt, during the 1st century BCE.
Around 53 BCE,[1] the position of the High Priest of Sekhmet fell to a man who promoted Menehet to be the High Priest's second in command. The same High Priest also greatly renovated the temple, and Menehet was more than pleased to show it off to his friend, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, when he visited Yamu again in 48 BCE.[2]
The High Priest also devised a host of ceremonies "showing (the Yamuans') "rustic" way of life", including the yearly Festival of Sekhmet to bring tourists into the village.[2] The pinnacle of the festival was the fight between two combatants, one playing the part of Sekhmet, the other of her nemesis, Isfet. He was also the inventor of the tale accompanying the battle, which, according to Menehet, would not be heard outside of Yamu.[1]
