The Robbers of Al-Ula were a group of thieves active in Al-Ula Valley in the 860s. Though some believed they were led by local criminal 'Abis, its real leader was actually the merchant Nimlot.[1] The group began by stealing from passing caravans, though soon expanded to stealing from the people living in Al-Ula and even the dead. At their height, not even the Caliphate soldiers dared to move against them,[2] since the few who attempted to intervene met with grisly fates.[3] Basim ibn Ishaq, who had arrived in Al-Ula seeking his father Ishaq ibn Khalid, first happened upon the group by happenstance,[3] but later actively opposed them, leading to the deaths of the group's leaders.[4][5]
The Robbers had stronghold at many locations throughout the valley, including Al-Khuraymat and Al-Ahmar Mountain in Hegra, the Robbers' South Outpost in the Southern Wilds, as well as the Robbers' Water Supply and the Robbers' North Outpost in Ramm Valley.[6] The Musa ibn Nusayr Fort in Al-Ula was controlled by 'Abis,[4] while Nimlot held court at the Roman Fort Ruins in the Northern Wilds.[5]
