Potidaia (Ancient Greek: Ποτίδαια), alternatively Potidaea or Poteidaia (Ποτείδαια), was an ancient Greek town located on the westernmost shore of the Chalkidike in Makedonia.

History[edit | edit source]

Founded as a colony by Korinth to make trade easier in Makedonia, Potidaia sought the help of Sparta and Korinth against the Athenians and their excessive demands, leading to a siege by Athens in 432 BCE. This battle served as a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War.[1]

After receiving a letter requesting the help of the "Eagle Bearer" in 429 BCE, the misthios Kassandra came to Potidaia, only to find it under attack by Spartan soldiers, with many villagers either slain or captured. After rescuing several civilians and meeting a man named Natakas, Kassandra was confronted by a member of the Order of the Ancients demanding her death. Fending off several Persian guards, she departed the village to meet with Natakas.[2]

Later on, Kassandra learned that a mercenary called Gaia the Fist haunted Potidaia and its surroundings, and promptly tracked him down and assassinated him.[3]
