Joseph Ettenreich (1800 – 1875) was an Austrian butcher who lived in Vienna in the 19th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Not much is known about Ettenreich's past, except that he worked in a butcher shop in Vienna by 1853. A regular of the tavern Nachzehrer Cellar in the city, he was a friend of the Hungarian tailor János Libényi. In the winter of 1853, once the former English soldier Simeon Price, who went by the identity of Jack Straw, entered the Nachzehrer Cellar, both Joseph and János talked about how Karl Mayr has been extorting and harassing János about moving his tailor shop. To their surprise, Straw revealed that Mayr had been killed, leading to a celebration for everyone at the tavern.[1]

On 18 February 1853, Joseph, alongside Maximilian Karl Lamoral O'Donnell and Straw, thwarted an attempt by János to assassinate the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph.[2] Afterwards, he and Straw restrained János until soldiers apprehended the tailor. The emperor's attendant thanked both the butcher and Straw for their aid.[3]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
