Jomsborg was a semi-legendary Viking stronghold, located on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea.
History[edit | edit source]
During the Viking Age, the stronghold served as the base of operations for the Jomsvikings, an order of Viking mercenaries which adhered to a strict code of conduct. In the late 10th century, Styrbjörn the Strong, searching for allies to help him overthrow his uncle, King Eric of Sweden, ventured to the stronghold and challenged the Jomsviking leader Palnatoke to a duel,[1] which he won, earning the loyalty of Palnatoke and his men.[2]
Around 985, Harald Bluetooth, the King of Denmark and Norway, died in Jomsborg.[3]
