Jamaica is an island country in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean, of which it is the third largest island. Its largest city and capital is Kingston, on the southern shore. In addition, it housed two forts: Fort Charlotte in the northwest, and Fort Navassa in the east, on a smaller island offshore.
History[edit | edit source]
Jamaica was ruled by Spain throughout the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. In 1655, however, the Spanish were forced off the island by the English. Jamaica remained English, and later British, until it gained full independence in 1962.[1]
Jamaica was the home of Peter Beckford, an English landowner, governor, and the employer of the Sage Thom Kavanagh in the latter half of the 17th century.[2] It was also the headquarters of the Dutch slaver and Templar ally Laurens Prins, until his death at the hands of Edward Kenway in 1717.[3]
In 1719, the pirate and Sage Bartholomew Roberts revealed the Observatory's location on the northern shore of the island, hidden within the jungles of Long Bay. He accompanied Edward there, only to betray and sell him to the British authorities after retrieving the Crystal Skull powering the Observatory.[4] Three years later, the Templar Grand Master Laureano de Torres y Ayala also found the complex and was killed inside it by Edward, who returned the Observatory's Crystal Skull to stabilize the complex. The Observatory was then sealed by the Assassins, protecting it from further incursions.[5]
In 1768, Lewis Hutchinson immigrated to Jamaica and bought Edinburgh Castle on the island. From 1770 until his arrest in 1773, Hutchinson resided in the castle, killing and robbing anyone who wandered into his home.[6] In 1776, the Assassin Connor traveled to the island and infiltrated the castle, eventually collecting a piece of a map leading to Captain William Kidd's hidden treasure.[7]
In 2014, the Templar Juhani Otso Berg conducted an unsuccessful excavation of the Observatory, discovering that the complex had been destroyed by a catastrophic collapse during the 18th century and was no longer accessible.[8]
