Alrekstad in Hordafylke

Hordaland, known as Hordafylke in Old Norse times, was a county in Norway, bordering Rogaland in the south. On 1 January 2020, it merged with Sogn og Fjordane to form Vestland.

History[edit | edit source]

Isu Era[edit | edit source]

The Yggdrasil Chamber, an Isu vault, was situated deep in the mountains of Hordafylke.[1] Shortly before the Great Catastrophe, the members of the Æsir used Yggdrasil to seed their genetic code into humanity's gene pool, ensuring they would be reborn as humans millennia later.[2]

Viking Age[edit | edit source]

During the 9th century, Hordafylke housed Alrekstad, the residence of Harald Fairhair, the first King of Norway. In December 872, Harald hosted an althing in Alrekstad, during which he announced his intentions to unify Norway under his rule. Among those in attendance were Gorm Kjotvesson and the Wolf Clan, who were ultimately banished from Norway by Harald, and Eivor Varinsdottir and Sigurd Styrbjornsson of the Raven Clan. After Eivor and Sigurd's father Styrbjorn swore fealty to King Harald, as hid many other jarls,[3] the siblings decided to leave Norway, refusing to live under Harald's rule, and settled in England.[4]

In 877, Eivor and Sigurd returned to Hordafylke to find the Yggdrasil Chamber, which the latter's visions were guiding him to. During their journey, the siblings made a brief stop in Alrekstad to visit Styrbjorn, who had fallen into depression and alcoholism. After Sigurd and Styrbjorn got into an argument regarding the latter's perceived failure as a father and a leader, the siblings left Alrekstad and continued towards their destination, eventually arriving at the Yggdrasil Chamber.[1]

Eivor and Sigurd inside the Yggdrasil Chamber

After Eivor and Sigurd connected themselves to Yggdrasil, they experienced a simulation of Valhalla, which Eivor soon grew disillusioned with, convincing Sigurd to leave and return to the real world. As they did so, they were attacked by their ally, the Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq, who had followed the pair. As the reborn form of Loki, Basim sought revenge on Eivor and Sigurd, who were the reincarnations of Odin and Týr, respectively, but was ultimately defeated and trapped in the Grey. Eivor and Sigurd then left the Yggdrasil Chamber, with the former returning to England.[5]

Around 889, Eivor visited King Harald and Sigurd, who had chosen to settle in Norway, at the longhouse in Alrekstad to say her goodbyes before she sailed to Vinland. Harald invited Eivor to lead an expedition to Iceland to send supplies to his friend Ingólfr Arnarson, but the shieldmaiden politely declined the offer.[6]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

In 2020, the Assassin Layla Hassan traveled to the Yggdrasil Chamber, hoping to use the Isu supercomputer to reverse the strengthening of the Earth's magnetic field, caused by Desmond Miles' activation of the global aurora borealis device in 2012. After entering the Grey, she met Basim's trapped consciousness, who helped her achieve her goal but tricked her into releasing him. Layla subsequently elected to remain inside the Grey with "the Reader" and help him study countless calculations, while Basim used the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus dropped by Layla to rejuvenate his physical body and be reborn in the modern world.[7]
