In 1853, in Vienna, Franz Joseph was walking on his usual route, alongside his soldiers and his military aide, Maximilian Karl Lamoral O'Donnell. However, he became the subject of an assassination attempt by Hungarian tailor János Libényi, who managed to stab the emperor in the neck with a kitchen knife.[2] With the intervention of his aide, Franz Joseph survived the attempt as the Viennese butcher Joseph Ettenreich and another associate, "Jack Straw," restrained Libényi before any more damage could be done.[3]
