The Robbers of Al-Ula were a group of bandits active in al-Ula Valley in the 860s. They were founded by the merchant Nimlot,[1] who fled from a caravanserai outside Baghdad fearing for his life after witnessing[2] the Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq publicly murder his father Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob, whom unbeknownst to many was an Order of the Ancients member.[3] Swearing revenge on Basim, he gathered brigands to his cause, set up his base at the Roman Fort Ruins in the Northern Wilds,[2] and masked his involvement behind a veneer of being an upstanding civilian,[4][5] willing to let the community believe that the mastermind was his chief torturer 'Abis[1] operating from Musa ibn Nusayr Fort.[6]
The group began by stealing from passing caravans, though soon expanded to stealing from al-Ula's people and even the dead Nabataeans buried in the local necropoli. At their height, not even the Abbasid Caliphate's Turkic Army dared to move against them,[7] since the few who attempted to intervene met with grisly fates.[4] Basim, who had arrived in al-Ula seeking his father Ishaq ibn Khalid, first happened upon the group by happenstance,[4] but later actively opposed them, leading to the deaths of the group's co-leaders.[6][2]
The Robbers had strongholds at many locations throughout the region, including al-Khuraymat and al-Ahmar Mountain in Hegra, the Robbers' South Outpost in the Southern Wilds, and the Robbers' Water Supply and the Robbers' North Outpost in Ramm Valley.[8]
