The series was revealed to be in the early stages of development in October 2020. Ubisoft partnered with Netflix to produce three separate Assassin's Creed series, one being an animated program, the second being anime, and the final being a live-action production. In an April 2021 Eurogamer interview, Ubisoft's Director of Transmedia and Business Development Aymar Azaïzia confirmed that "[they had] secured a couple of talents and are working with them on the show". He was hesitant to share anything else, apart from the acknowledging that the team had learned from mistakes on the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, noting that the world of Assassin's Creed would better translate into a television series for easing newcomers into the franchise considering the large amount of background lore present. On 14 June, Variety (magazine) announced that Jeb Stuart had been enlisted to serve as writer and showrunner after his previous success creating the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla, a continuation of the History Channel series Vikings (2013 TV series).

In mid-July, the series was officially announced during Netflix's annual Tudum event. Netflix's Vice President of Scripted Series Peter Friedlander expressed hope in the series, believing that the crew had "carefully crafted an epic adventure" that would attract both fans and general audiences. In a joint statement, Patino and Wiener said that beneath the series' freerunning and spectacle was a "most essential" story about people questioning their identities and faiths, forging intercultural connections across time, and the value of those ties when they break because of external factors like power struggles, revenge, and greed.

On 2 January 2023, in a Collider interview, Jeb Stuart stated in that he was no longer part of the project. Assassin's Creed is a live-action television series, currently in development by Ubisoft Film & Television. It is set to air on the Netflix streaming platform[2] towards late-2026.[3] Roberto Patino and David Wiener will serve as creators and showrunners, with the position of executive producer being jointly shared between themselves and Ubisoft Film's CEO Gérard Guillemot,[4][5] Vice-President[6] Austin Dill,[4][5] Head of Film and Television Content[7] Margaret Boykin,[4][5] and Matthew O'Toole[4][5] from the Independent Artist Group.[8]

Official description[edit | edit source]

Assassin's Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions—one set on determining mankind's future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity's destiny.[4]

Production[edit | edit source]

Development[edit | edit source]

The series was revealed to be in the early stages of development in October 2020. Ubisoft partnered with Netflix to produce three separate Assassin's Creed series, one being an animated program, the second being anime, and the final being a live-action production. Although a showrunner had not been found,[2] Ubisoft's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik were announced as Executive Producers after the NetflixGeeked Twitter account posted a 10-second teaser video revealing the Netflilx logo in the Assassin insignia.[9]

In an April 2021 Eurogamer interview, Ubisoft's Director of Transmedia and Business Development Aymar Azaïzia confirmed that "[they had] secured a couple of talents and are working with them on the show". He was hesitant to share anything else, apart from the acknowledging that the team had learned from mistakes on the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, noting that the world of Assassin's Creed would better translate into a television series for easing newcomers into the franchise considering the large amount of background lore present.[10] On 14 June, Variety announced that Jeb Stuart had been enlisted to serve as writer and showrunner after his previous success creating the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla, a continuation of the History Channel series Vikings.[11]

In February 2022, Stuart provided an update to The Playlist, indicating that the casting process had not been initiated at that stage but suggested that the show would be shot internationally.[12] That July, Kreinik left Ubisoft Film & and Television for Jerry Bruckheimer Television.[13] On 11 September, at the Ubisoft Forward event, franchise Vice President Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté revealed to Collider that the series was still in early development and promised a "genre-bending live-action adaptation".[14]

In a January 2023 interview with Collider, Stuart stated in that he was no longer part of the project, citing the move of executives from Los Angeles to London, England and having different creative visions on the show's direction as the reason for the separation.[15] That April, Altman left Ubisoft for a position at Netflix,[16] leaving the series without either Executive Producer.

In a February 2025 TechCrawler article, they claimed via an insider source that the series was on-hold until further notice,[17] though Netflix's Head of Gaming Alain Tascan later contradicted this in an April interview with Game File in which he revealed the series was still in active development.[18][19] In mid-May, citing the Writers Guild of America,[1] Nexus Point News reported that the series will have a single season that will debut closer to 2025–2026 and had a new writers' group whose members were Roberto Patino and David Wiener as joint Executive Producers and Showrunners; Claire Kiechel and Jaquén Castellanos as Co-Executive Producers; and Sanaz Toossi, Emily St. John Mandel, Sam Reynolds, Daniel Goldberg, and Tom Hemmings as Staff Writers.[20]

In mid-July, the series was officially announced during Netflix's annual Tudum event. Netflix's Vice President of Scripted Series Peter Friedlander expressed hope in the series, believing that the crew had "carefully crafted an epic adventure" that would attract both fans and general audiences. In a joint statement, Patino and Wiener said that beneath the series' freerunning and spectacle was a "most essential" story about people questioning their identities and faiths, forging intercultural connections across time, and the value of those ties when they break because of external factors like power struggles, revenge, and greed.[4][5]

Casting[edit | edit source]

On 25 November 2025, Deadline Hollywood broke exclusive news that the Australian actor Toby Wallace was the first cast member to join as the series' co-lead after finishing filming his scenes in the 2019 American TV series Euphoria's third season. In that same announcement, Deadline revealed that production was expected in Italy at some point the next year, the series' time period was still undetermined, and its characters would be separate from the games' many protagonists.[21] Two weeks later, on 11 December, Variety reported that the Irish actor Lola Petticrew had joined in an unspecified capacity[22] as a "series regular"[23] after they[24] finished filming the lead role in the 2025 Northern Irish TV adaptation of Louise Kennedy's 2022 novel Trespasses.[22]

The last weeks of 2025 saw three more announcements in short order. On 15 December, Deadline broke news that the Birmingham-born British theater actor Zachary Hart would also be a series regular,[25] followed up on 19 December with a report that the English actor Laura Marcus was joining in a similar capacity on the heels of her role in the Star Wars political thriller series Andor,[26] after which Variety's revealed on 23 December that the Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck would be the series' director.[27]

Filming[edit | edit source]

In March 2026, filming was reported to have been started in the Camaldoli area of Italy. With a scheduled filming duration of seven months, it is expected for filming to wrap on in October.[3]
