Abia the Shaded was a mercenary who operated in Greece during the 5th century BCE.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Abia was the daughter of a Greek soldier who was always seconded by her sister. After their father was killed in battle, she and her sister became orphans and soon parted ways. From then on, she swore that she would no longer be second to her sister and was determined not to let anyone get in her way. She even lived by a motto which she learned from her father: "Always the sheep, never the wolf". Eventually, she became a reputed mercenary, such that a bounty contract was placed on her head.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra accepted a bounty placed on Abia, hunting her down and claiming her personal axe.[2]
