Olav the Unlucky
Olav the Unlucky was a Norse guide under the command of Gorm Kjotvesson, until Gorm locked him up for trading with the natives of Vinland, the Kanien'kehá:ka. Afterwards, Olav lived and interacted with the natives as he became situated in a cave under a waterfall in their settlement.
Biography[edit | edit source]
A traveler to Vinland, Olav was one of many workers brought by Gorm, who sought to excavate the Grand Temple after being guided to the site by his Crystal Ball. Olav was first mentioned by a Norseman to be missing when the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir arrived on the shores of Vinland. Although Olav worked as a guide to deliver fresh materials for Gorm, the shoremaster, Hilde, told the Norseman that they would find him.[1]

Around Nyhofn, Eivor learned that Olav was to be locked in a storage room after conducting unsanctioned trading. However, Olav had escaped his chains and left a trail of blood behind. As Eivor followed the trail to Tiotenontatierénhton, she found that Olav had seemingly taken refuge in the settlement of Karonhiakèn:iate'. The village leader Konwahawíhshon led Eivor to the waterfall near the settlement and introduced her to a rambling Olav. As Konwahawíhshon left them to talk, Olav initially assumed Eivor had come to kill him, but after learning it was not the case, he introduced himself as "Olav the Unlucky", before remarking that the epithet no longer fit him since he had escaped his captivity.[2]
During their conversation, Olav learned that Eivor was looking for Gorm so she could eliminate him. Happy to help the Viking get rid of his tormentor, Olav showed her how Gorm organized his campsites and where her target might be located. He also hinted that Eivor might want to garner supplies from the campsites and the surrounding woods and trade them with the natives to obtain better weapons and armor.[2]
After Eivor was wounded during her search for Gorm, Olav waited for her outside the tent where she recuperated. When Eivor was handed some berries by Karonhiaktátie', Olav told her that they would aid her recovery and that they grew in the nearby forest, meaning Eivor could gather more whenever she wanted.[3]

Following Eivor's successful assassination of Gorm, Olav was given the good news when the Viking returned to Karonhiakèn:iate'. Olav then invited Eivor to attend the village's nightly story session, which the Viking contributed to with a story of her own. The following day, at the shores of Nyhofn, while Hilde met with Eivor, Olav arrived and ran to his sister, embracing her after a long separation. Olav informed Hilde that Gorm was dead and that he no longer needed to hide.[4]
Eivor and Hilde then decided to return to England, but Olav elected to stay in Vinland for another season or two, living with his new friends from Karonhiakèn:iate'. As Eivor and Hilde readied the longship to sail away, Olav bid them farewell before returning to the village.[4]
