Odin's Rest

Odin's Rest was a hilltop, used for Viking funeral pyres, in Snotinghamscire.

History[edit | edit source]

In 876, Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan met with Sunniva, Trygve, and Vili Hemmingson to discuss preparations for the late Hemming Jarl's funeral service. After Vili and Trygve left the meeting, Eivor consulted with Sunniva about the task of choosing the next jarl between Trygve and Vili.[1] After all of the preparations were done, she met with Sunniva and floated the possibility of Vili joining their clan. After their brief discussion, Sunniva let Eivor know that Trygve was preparing to die alongside Hemming at the funeral pyre.[2]

Both Sunniva and Eivor overheard Trygve and Vili arguing over Trygve's desire of sacrifice besides his late friend. Eivor came down from the pyre setup and influenced Trygve's decision on his sacrifice. After some time, a meditating Eivor was disturbed by Sunniva, who divulged that invading Picts were near and Vili went to fight them. Thus, she left and went to help Vili, who was saved and returned back to Odin's Rest after dealing with the Picts.[2]

Once the funeral commenced, Eivor gifted a shield she marked from an exiled craftsman,[3] and then Vili started his speech to all the attendees. After Vili finished, the pyre was lit as all of the invited guests, including King Halfdan Ragnarsson and his advisor, Hjorr Halfsson, started to drink and remember the late jarl.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
