Wyatt was an Anglo-Saxon thegn who served under ealdorman Birstan during the 9th century. As one of Birstan's frequent guests, Wyatt was one of the lords who criticized the ealdorman for his lack of professionalism and expertise at his duty.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Little is known about his past, yet Wyatt was one of Essexe's three thegns who ruled under Birstan's leadership. In 875, Wyatt attended a gathering of lords at the Ealdorman's House, when the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir approached him looking for more information. Instead of helping, Wyatt stated he and the other lords were waiting for Birstan and complained that the ale was running out.[1]

After Eivor found the ealdorman and brought him back to his house, Wyatt and the other thegns pushed Birstan to voice his thoughts on their current dilemmas. Wyatt asked Birstan about how to pay for the upcoming Lammas Festival, and Birstan responded through Eivor's advice. After hearing no actual solutions, Wyatt and the other thegns insulted Birstan as a hopeless ealdorman, prompting Birstan to quickly dismissed them from his house.[1]

Despite their bad parting, Wyatt later was invited to Birstan's party to welcome his lost sweetheart Alfida into his home after his wife Estrid arranged her own "kidnapping" by the Viking Rollo hours earlier.[2]
