Son of Ra
| They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me Son of Ra. This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias. |
The Son of Ra[1] (died 48 BCE) was an Egyptian farmer-turned-criminal who led a group of bandits in and around Dionysias, around 48 BCE.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Sometime before 47 BCE, the man who became the Son of Ra was a farmer. Misfortune befell him when unknown attackers burned his fields, and act that also led to his family's death. Thinking that their farming neighbors had done nothing but watch, the man adopted the moniker "Son of Ra".[1]
He later created a kind of a cult around himself, its members consisting of bandits who revered Son of Ra as a god, believing in his divinity. They set up multiple camps around the White Desert Oasis, with one in the ruins of a temple to the crocodile-god Sobek, where the Son of Ra set up a shrine; another at the waterfalls of the lake; and a third further south.[2] With the bandits in these locations, the Son of Ra began to harass, burn, and pillage the villages and farms on the outskirts of Dionysias in 51 BCE.[1]
In 48 BCE, the local militia in the Dionysias Caravanserai captured the Son of Ra. Captain Kallipos wanted to execute him, but his superiors forbid this. Despite his imprisonment, the Son of Ra sent messages to his followers, ordering them to continue their activities and target the Greek farmer Bion.[1] This attracted the Medjay Bayek's attention, and after joining forces with the Dionysiote farmer-turned-warrior Zahra, they infiltrated the fort, where Bayek ultimately assassinated the Son of Ra.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Son of Ra is a fictional character in Assassin's Creed: Origins, where he was voiced by Canadian actor Kareem Tristan Alleyne. He is implied to either be working with the Order of the Ancients member The Crocodile,[2] or at least be of interest to them given Kallipos' orders to spare him,[1] but the exact nature of his connection to the Order remains dubious.
'Son of Ra' is part of the pharaoh Tutankhamun's complete name: Nesu bity (NebkheperuRa) Sa Ra (Tutankhamun), meaning 'King of Upper and Lower Egypt (The lordly manifestations of Ra) Son of Ra (The living image of Amun)'.
The Son of Ra has some disparate elements that make him an interesting character. He is the only character in the franchise to be given a Memory Corridor confession upon his death in a mission that is unrelated to either a main story or a downloadable expansion. His words on how the world would burn and how neither the Order of the Ancients nor Bayek could save it possibly forewarn of the Second Disaster. In one of the letters Son of Ra sent to his followers, he revealed astronomy knowledge that was uncommon in antiquity by saying the sun "is a rock on fire";[2] this exact phrasing comes from a 2013 letter written by the imprisoned American cult leader Charles Manson.[3] Other phrases copied over include "The only way it can be is the only way it could ever be", "[Ra] don't lie", "[Ra] never gives up or falls down", and "[The light] of this world is beyond all but the pure darkness of my dreams". These, plus the fact that Origins' first draft dealt with "Juno events" that were later cut from the final product,[4] led to speculation he was an Aita Sage.
