Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian's Wall is a former Roman fortification in the Roman province of Britannia in what is now northern England.

Built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in 122, the wall was intended to defend the province from the Britons in the north, which the Romans failed to conquered. The walls were subsequently abandoned after the Roman departure from the island, leaving few to maintain and keep it intact.[1]
Shortly after Emperor Marcus Aurelius came to power, the Hidden Ones made motions towards him to broker peace in the region. In 164, Aurelius agreed to cease hostilities and retreat south from the Antonine Wall to the more easily defensible Hadrian's Wall. Although the Hidden Ones trusted Aurelius to abide by the deal, they sent Magister Eghan to oversee the retreat in order to verify that Aurelius kept his word.[2]
Numerous fortifications on the walls, such as the Magnis Fortress, remained intact. In fact, this fortress became a Pictish stronghold by the 9th century.[3]
In the 870s, the ruined walls and its abandoned landmarks such as Housesteads and the Brunton Turret were visited and explored by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir.[3]
In 878, the Celtic witch-warrior Niamh of Argyll and her apprentice Birdie crossed through a crack within Hadrian's Wall to follow a task given to Niamh by The Lady of Avalon, the leader of the Women of the Mist. Niamh and Birdie passed through the wall from Caledonia to England to find and investigate the Hidden Ones.[4] Later, Niamh, this time accompanied by the Hidden One Hytham, returned to the wall and again passed through the fortification to reach Caledonia, where Eivor was fighting against invading Picts. Hytham wanted to warn her about the Order of the Ancients and the Descendants of the Round Table's combined interest in Excalibur while Niamh secretly planned to take the sword for her own people.[5]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Hadrian's Wall is a location in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Its appearance in the game was first confirmed in May 2020 by then-creative director Ashraf Ismail in an interview with The Washington Post.[6]
