The dromos of Sparta

The Dromos was a course for footraces in the polis of Sparta, Lakonia in the 5th century BCE.

At the dromos young Spartans were integrated into the city by offering sacrifices at the statue of Herakles when they reached adulthood.

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the location, looking for the trainer of the Spartan pankratist Testikles, Alkon.

Trivia

• Δρόμος (drómos) is the Greek word meaning 'racetrack, course, avenue'. It was also used of a walkway leading to a building, especially a ceremonial one, like those found leading to temples or tombs in Ancient Greece or Egypt.
• Despite both the historical location tidbit and the Discovery Tour mentioning the statue of Herakles, no such statue stands near the dromos in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
