Aelwyn
Aelwyn was an Anglo-Saxon girl from Wincestre who served as an apprentice, spy, and thief for the Order of the Ancients member Hilda in the 9th century. She was the sister of Wigbert, who worked alongside her for Hilda.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Aelwyn's first years are unknown, but as a young orphan girl, she was found and taken in by Hilda, who empathized with the girl due to their similar backgrounds. Alongside other orphaned children, Aelwyn was put to work by Hilda and gathered information by either stealing or spying all around Wincestre. Along her new way of life, Aelwyn worked closely with Wigbert, her brother.[1]
In 877, Aelwyn and Wigbert were caught setting a haystack aflame. The two were then chased by Anglo-Saxon soldiers as the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir made sure to follow them to find out what they knew about The Quill. Once Eivor found the children, Aelwyn was joined by Wigbert, who was shocked to see the Viking. Before Eivor could question either of them, two of The Quill's thugs arrived and demanded that Aelwyn give back what she had stolen.[1]
After Eivor dealt with the thugs, Aelwyn stated that they were The Quill's men and that she and her brother had survived The Quill's clutches. Having won their trust, Eivor was given a key by Aelwyn and Wigbert, which unlocked the entrance to the city sewers, where The Quill had taken refuge. Before Eivor left to hunt down The Quill, Aelwyn wished her good luck.[1]
While the Viking investigated the sewers, Aelwyn mocked her from above and eventually revealed herself alongside her mentor Hilda, The Quill. As Eivor realized she had been led into an ambush, she insulted Hilda for taking advantage of children to do her bidding. Aelwyn then left as Eivor fought against Hilda and her guards, ultimately killing them.[1] Following Hilda's death, Aelwyn went into hiding and asked her brother to join her, but he refused.[2]
