Tyrian Purple Facility on Kythera Island

Tyrian purple is a dye made from the murex shellfish, especially on the Kythera Island, where a whole settlement sprung up around the production and handling of the dye.

Millions of the creatures were required to produce even a small amount of the dye, which was subsequently greatly valued.[1] This meant that whoever could afford to dress in clothes dyed Tyrian purple was considered wealthy, like the self-proclaimed 'god' Empedokles.[2][3]

Trivia

  • Tyrian purple gets its name from the city of Tyre, the home city of the Phoenicians, who are credited for inventing the dye.
    • Because of this, Tyrian purple also goes by the name 'Phoenician purple'.
