The Third French Republic was the teritary republic of France that took place after the downfall of the Second French Empire and dissolved after the Fall of France during World War II.

History

On 4 September 1870, the Government of National Defense was established after Napoleon III's capture and fall as emperor as it tried with its provisions and aid to the people of France from the onslaught of the Prussians during the Franco-Prussian War.[1][2]

Initial opposition

In the winter of 1871, the Government of National Defense signed an armistic with the Prussians, who was victorious in the war, and their leader Kaiser Wilhelm I started their new German Republic taking lands of France as his own. In response, the government disbanded and the Third French Republic was the officially successor of the Second French Empire. However, most of the government officials maintained a monarchist stance and as a result, another Committee of Public Safety was initiated to respond such debates. As a response, another Paris Commune was initiated, but it was short-lived and the republic survived their national crisis.[3]

Belle Époque

After the war, the republic enjoyed a peaceful and prosperous period called the Belle Époque. For at least forty years, the city of Paris underwent technological advances, economic rise, and an betterment of life. In fact, by 1889, the Eiffel Tower[4] was created and the exhibition of the Gallery of Machines was showcased[5] to represent France's new prowess.[4]
