Skylax the Fair

Skylax the Fair (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Cult of Kosmos and of the Peloponnesian League branch during the Peloponnesian War.

He was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra on her quest to destroy the Cult.

Biography

Skylax knew what others in the Peloponnesian League did not: where force failed, drachmae always won. In this way, with a massive fortune at his disposal, Skylax bribed the weaker puppet leaders in the League. For this service, Skylax prayed to Kosmos to return his lost children and wife to him. It was a prayer that would go unanswered.

Trivia

  • Skylax is a name most likely derived from the Ancient Greek words σκύλος ( skylos) meaning "skin, hide" or σκυλεύω( skyleuo) which can mean "to strip" as well as "to get the spoils of war". In modern Greek σκύλαξ (skylax) means "young dog, puppy".
