"I'm not interested in drachmae. The only currency I accept is orichalcum."
―Sargon[src]

Sargon was a Greek merchant who operated in Kirrha, Phokis during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

In 431 BCE Sargon made the acquaintance of the Spartan misthios Kassandra and explained to her how he did business. Kassandra would later come to do business with Sargon, exchanging orichalcum for rare weapons and armor.[1]

At one point Sargon tasked a group of smugglers led by Iola to smuggle a bear for him. Unfortunately, their ship was wrecked, and the bear escaped on the northern shores of Delos, mauling the crew to death, with Iola as the sole survivor.[2]

Trivia

  • The name Sargon is the Hebrew version of the Akkadian name Sharru-ukin, from the words Šarru, meaning 'king', and kinu, meaning 'true, legitimate'.
    • Based on this, it is possible that Sargon is a Hellenized Assyrian, as he shares the name with several Assyrian kings.  The most famous being Sargon of Akkad, the founder of the Akkadian Empire.
