Potidaia
Potidaia, alternatively Potidaea (Ancient Greek: Ποτίδαια, Ποτείδαια) was a polis of ancient Greece, located in the Triple Peninsula of Chalkidike region of Makedonia.
Founded as a colony by Korinth to make trade easier in Makedonia, Potidaia sought the help of Sparta and Korinth against Athens and their excessive demands, leading to a siege by Athens in 430 BCE. This battle served as a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War.[1]
After receiving a letter requesting the help of the 'Eagle Bearer' in 429 BCE, the misthios Kassandra came to Potidaia only to see it burning, the citizens slain or captured.[2]
