Penelope was the wife of Odysseus, a Greek hero and King of Ithaka in Homer's Odyssey.
At some point in her life, Penelope possessed a prized shroud, which she had stored in her husband's palace in Ithaka. In the 5th century BCE, the shroud was stolen by a group of bandits. In 431 BCE, Elpenor requested the Spartan mercenary Kassandra to travel to the palace and retrieve the shroud. When Kassandra returned with shroud, Kassandra was convinced by Elpenor to keep it.[1]
