Olav the Unlucky

Olav the Unlucky was a Norse guide under the command of Gorm Kjotvesson, until Gorm locked him up for trading with the natives of Vinland, the Kanien'kehá:ka. Afterwards, Olav lived and interacted with the natives as he became situated in a cave under a waterfall in their settlement.

Biography

A traveler to Vinland, Olav was one of many workers brought to Vinland under Gorm, who led his search for the site that coincided with his Crystal Ball. Olav was first mentioned by a Norseman to be missing when the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir first arrived on the shores of Vinland. Although Olav worked as a guide to deliver fresh material for Gorm, the shoremaster, Hilde, told the Norseman that they will find him.

Around Nyhofn, Olav was told to be locked in a storage room after conducting unsanctioned trading, from Eivor's investigation. However, Olav had escaped his chains and left a trail of blood behind. As Eivor followed the trail around the viewpoint of Tiotenontatierénhton, Olav had seemingly entered the settlement of Karonhiakèn:iate'. As village leader Konwahawíhshon led Eivor to the waterfall in their village, ramblings of a madman, Olav, came from the waterfall. There, Konwahawíhshon introduced Olav to Eivor. As Konwahawíhshon left them to talk, Olav first believed that Eivor came to kill him, which Eivor negated. Elated, Olav introduced himself as "Olav the Unlucky," but protested the 'unlucky' part as he escaped custody and a worse fate from Gorm. Within the conversation, Olav was told by Eivor of her wanting to find Gorm and settling their feud between them. Happy, Olav decided to show Eivor of how Gorm organized his campsites and where Gorm might be. Olav also hinted that within the woods and at these camps that Eivor might want to garner some supplies from them to trade and obtain better weapons and armor.

After Eivor was wounded during her search to kill Gorm, Olav waited for her outside of the aid tent. Olav let Eivor know that these berries were around the forest for her to eat and replenish anytime she wanted.

After being delivered the good news of Gorm's death, Olav invited Eivor to attend the nightly story time of the village. Later at the shores of Nyhofn, while Hilde met with Eivor, Olav shouted and ran to his sister as both Olav and Hilde embraced each other. Olav let Hilde know that Eivor killed Gorm and he had no longer needed to hide. As Hilde and Eivor stated that there is no monetary gain here, Olav stated he will stay for a season or two in this land with his new friends. Olav gave farewells as Eivor and Hilde readied the longship to leave for Ravensthorpe.
