The suppression of the revolt in 427 BC was followed by a famous debate at Athens in which the assembly ordered the execution of the entire male population of Mytilene, but then reversed that order a day later.

The Mytilean revolt (428-427 BCE) was an incident during the Peloponnesian War in which the city of Mytilene attempted to unify the island of Lesbos under its control and leave the Athenian-led Delian League.

History

Lesbos had sided with Athens' Delian League since the beginning of the war, providing it ships. They had a falling out, and collaborating with Sparta, the Mytileneans revolted.^[1]

Kleon, having risen to power following the death of Perikles ^[2], took it upon himself to deal with the revolt^[3], intending to wipe out the Mytileneans completely.^[4]^[5]
