Kyle Macdougall (born 1278) was a Scottish mercenary and member of Sören's group.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Early childhood[edit | edit source]

Born in 1278, Kyle was the only child to clan leader Alexander Macdougall, who named her Kyle over his disappointment of not having a boy.[1] However, she was trained as a warrior,[2] but was later arranged to be married off to a rival clan. However, she left her home to live her own life without any marital restraints.[3]

Guarding Fillan[edit | edit source]

By 1296, Kyle joined Norwegian mercenary Sören and his group. Within time, he had helped her mend her wound with her father. Following Sören's lead, the group was tasked by the Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins to recover the twins Fillan and Ailéas from Berwick from their contact, the town's tailor Alastair Aitken. However, the mercenaries only recovered Fillan and determined that his sister must have fallen.[4] Kyle soon met a bound Fillan and discussed why the Brotherhood wanted him with Sören. Kyle was then tasked to scout the woods to see if there were any trackers. She brought back an English soldier, who was interrogated by Sören and admitted that he and others were after Fillan. Immediately, Sören killed the soldier.[5]

Kyle and the mercenaries soon protected Fillan while making their way to Cranshaws. Arriving in the town, they were soon ambushed by the English soldiers and the Lann Fala, an extremist Templar group of hunters, as they looked for Fillan. While she and her teammates fought off the ambush, they all saw Fillan foolishly charge at Lann Fala leader Cornavii but the boy froze.[6] Fellow mercenary Craig moved Fillan out while teammate and druidess Moira pushed him back to mercenary Fergus.[7]

While Kyle and her fellow mercenaries retreated, they all felt a loss when Craig sacrificed himself for the Lann Fala. After they found a safe place to camp, Fillan was reprimanded and beaten for his actions, which led to Kyle helping him up.[7] While Fillan was recovering, Kyle discussed with him what Craig meant to them, especially being Fergus' cousin.[1] The next day, Kyle started to train Fillan and tells of what the Lann Fala was but retracted from any further information. During one session, they were stopped by Sören, who spoke to her about his conclusion of Fillan being a Child of Fal.[8]

Making their way to Dalkeith, Kyle continued to train her training with Fillan, while Sören spoke with Assassin spy Deorsa about lying about their mission.[9] Four days later, Sören interrupted Kyle's training and fought with Fillan to assess him. When Fillan showed improvement, Sören assigned Fillan to join them and ambush a nearby English encampment.[10] Before the attack, Kyle gave Fillan a pendant of Ogme, a god of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Successfully, they killed the English trackers.[11]

Celebrating Bealltainn[edit | edit source]

While staying in Dalkeith, Kyle soon checked in and spent time with Fillan, enjoying the festivities of Bealltainn. After talking to a local druidess about Fillan's future, Kyle and Fillan spent the day together and found themselves back to their training ground. Making the first move, she kissed him. However, unknown to her, she watched while her fellow mercenaries took Fillan blindfolded[12] and locked him in a cave for his Bealltainn rite of passage.[13] However, although Fillan passed, Kyle felt his anger and resentment during their practice. Soon after the festival ended, they were all told by Deorsa to leave for Leith and then Scone.[14]

Traveling to the Brotherhood[edit | edit source]

Arriving in Leith, Kyle, Moira, and Fillan found themselves in an inn, where the druidess pushed both of them to talk. She admitted that she wanted to kiss him but that she knew nothing of the rite passage before calling him a simpleton. However, she left him alone and went to meet with Moira, but it led Fillan to being attacked by a thief, who died at Fillan's hands. Fortunately, they all found a ship and sailed away. Kyle soon reassured Fillan that he defended himself before kissing him on the cheek.[14]

Arriving in Scone, Kyle and her group waited while Fillan and Sören met with the Scottish Brotherhood about Fillan.[15] After some time,[2] Fillan decided to join the Brotherhood, who tasked Sören to be his mentor. After the last meeting, the mercenaries planned to leave for Sören's home, Beinn Eallair, but Kyle took Fillan away to watch the night sky. Before long, she kissed him and they spend the night together.[16]

However, they both awoke to commotion and fire near the Brotherhood's base at the abbey and saw Sören telling both of them to escape while the rest tried to distract any of the attackers. When Kyle and Fillan took their treetops, they saw fire spreading and English soldiers searching for them below. However, she slipped and alerted the English to their presence. Although Sören came back to help, Fillan fell to an arrow in his arm but Kyle came to his protection. While she took five guards away from him, Cornavii came out of the flames and held Fillan at his throat. Fortunately, the mercenaries came to aid him while Sören fought against Cornavii solely. Fortunately, the English and the Lann Fala retreated but Fillan fell unconscious due to his wound.[17]

Living at Beinn Eallair[edit | edit source]

While traveling, Kyle and Moira gagged Fillan, whose moaning was too loud to venture silently. After finding themselves in the Highlands, they all arrived at Beinn Eallair.[18] Miraculously, Fillan recovered from his grievous wound and practiced under Sören, while Kyle and him spent time together between his training. However, she mentioned that she will not be "owned" in a relationship and after a brief argument, she left Fillan to calm her nerves. After some time, they both reconciled.[19] Months passed while Fillan advanced in his training with Sören.[20] Before long, Deorsa came and asked for Fillan's assistance and also his assigning his first assassination target. When he agreed, Kyle and her fellow mercenaries also decided to join him in Assassin William Wallace's campaign for Scotland.[21]

Fighting for Scotland[edit | edit source]

Together, they all traveled with Deorsa to meet with William. However, the group separated from Fillan, who was tasked to kill Commander Bradley Dacre, while they assisted William's war efforts.[22] Before long, they all reconvened after Fillan killed Dacre, reunited with his twin sister Ailéas, and joined William's war efforts along with Kyle and her fellow mercenaries.[23] After two weeks, they all rode to Dunstaffnage, Kyle's childhood home and her father's base.[3] Back with her clan, she, the twins and her fellow mercenaries held back the attack from the English, but Sören and Deorsa realized that the Lann Fala have deduced the Stone of Fal's location. While the twins and Moira go with Sören and Deorsa to the Isle of Mull, Kyle and Fergus stayed with their clan to fight the incoming English reinforcements.[24]

Fortunately, Clan Macdougall held back the English from the attack, as Kyle and her fellow clansmen sailed to Iona. While nearing its shore, Kyle stood at the brow of the ship, where she was seen by both Fillan and Aileas, who secured the stone's safety and defeated the Lann Fala.[25]
