Tuatha Dé Danann
The Tuatha Dé Danann (English: "the folk of the goddess Danu") are a supernatural race in Irish mythology, with many of them thought to represent deities of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland. They are said to dwell in the Hill of Tara.[1]
Mythology[edit | edit source]
According to Irish myth, the Tuatha Dé Danann descended like mist from the skies and settled in Ireland long before humans did. Described as people of great knowledge, they are credited with creating the ancient stones throughout the island, including the Lia Fáil[2] and the stones at Carnagan.[3] The group also opposed a race called the Fomorians, said to be bringers of disease, despair and death.[4]
According to Scottish legend, the Tuatha Dé Danann brought the Stone of Scone, along with four others, from Ireland to Scotland, where it remained.[5]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The Tuatha Dé Danann's life of peace and wisdom inspired the druids that came after their existence.[2] However, the Children of Danu, a more violent sect of druids, also referenced these deities with their group's name.[6]
In 2020, Assassin Layla Hassan modified her Animus and included a spear said to be one of four treasures left behind by the Tuatha Dé Danann.[7]
