Kydonia (Ancient Greek: Κυδωνία) is a site in the Greek island of Crete. In classical antiquity, it was a polis located in the Little Egypt region of Messara.

History

In the 6th century BCE, Kydonia was re-founded by the Samians; still, its history pre-dated this event and thus it was considered one of the oldest cities in Crete.

The city housed the home of Kresilas, a sculptor known for his statue of the Athenian general Perikles.[1]

Trivia

  • Kydonia's name is said to be derived from the quinces grown in the region.
