The shipwreck on the beach

The Ketos Shipwreck was a shipwreck located south of Phokis, off the coast of the Hill of the Sacred War during the 5th century BCE.

History

Before it became a shipwreck, it used to be a ship called The Shark's Tooth, captained by Gelon. However, around 431 BCE, her crew went treasure hunting and were sank by the nearby soldiers. The sharks in the waters finished the crew.[1]

At Gelon's request, the Spartan misthios Kassandra found the shipwreck and looted its treasures, among them a bracelet belonging to Gelon's beloved, Gyke.[1]

Trivia

  • The name of the shipwreck references the mythical sea monster Ketos, to whom Andromeda was about to be sacrificed when the legendary hero Perseus intervened.
