"What is a leader if he hides behind the walls he built himself? Send me fire, storm, or sickness, but bring me justice for my city."--Hermippos.

Hermippos (died 431 BCE) was a member of the Cult of Kosmos, operating under the Eyes of Kosmos branch in Athens, Greece during the 5th century BCE.

Character Description

Hermippos, son of Lysis and brother to Myrtilos, sought to undermine Athen's fragile democracy at every turn. He was a vile, and impetuous man, using the theater to accuse Perikles of cowardice, and to coerce Athenian voters to demand war. Secretly, he was much the same, working from the shadows to force Athens to fight Sparta head on.

Biography

Kassandra came across Sokrates arguing with a playwright named Aristophanes who was angry at Hermippos for badmouthing Perikles at one of his plays. After the discussion, Aristophanes acked Kassandra to find Hermippos at his residence since he was nowhere to be found. At the residence, Kassandra found a cultist mask indicating that Hermippos was a member of the Cult of Kosmos.

Kassandra then tracked down Hermippos through a letter he obtained at his residence and killed him, putting an end to his spying and badmouthing.

Clues

  • Letter to the Master--"M., Soon will be the time to act. My contact - a fort captain who feeds me information - says Attika will soon fall, and chaos will reign over this place. Our Sage has moved into place to prepare. These lands will be ours. Every coin flowing into the city - ours. We must work in the shadows to bend the light. Now, bight your tongue - no one must know who you truly are, or what we are planning. We must see, but go unseen. The Eyes see all. H."

Trivia

  • In the novel Hermippos dies at sea, drowning alongside three other cultists, their ship cleaved by the Adrestia as Kassandra flees Athens for Argolis in search of Hippokrates just after he attempted to poison her at Perikles's Symposium.
