Halewyn was a druid mystic that lived in Druid's Cottage in 9th century southeastern Glowecestrescire, England.

Biography

Not much is known about Halewyn, except that he followed the ways and lifestyle of a druid and that he lived as a recluse, when compared to the townspeople of Glowecestre.[1]

From Modron and Gwenydd's recollection, Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir sought Halewyn to determine the contents of Gwilim's pouch that she found in Tewdwr's home. Eivor traveled to the Druid's Cottage and knocked on the door, disguised as the Mari Lwyd. Halewyn answered and saw Eivor's presence as a sign and a human form of a light spirit. Halewyn, however, noticed none of his wicker men were set ablaze and asked the spirit to light them on fire. After setting the wicker men on fire and investigating Halewyn's house, Eivor talked to Halewyn, who tested her even further. Halewyn asked for the answers of a set of three riddles about certain charms. From her search, Eivor answered all correctly and proved herself to be a spirit in Halewyn's eyes. Eivor asked the druid about the pouch and anything about its owner. Halewyn remembered that the contents were to aid one's need for sleep and that the man lived in an area called Cudd Lladron. From Halewyn's info, Eivor left to meet with Modron.[1]

When the burning of the Samhain wicker man commenced, Halewyn was present for the ceremony and the burning itself.[2]
