Alferth (died 985) was a Viking warrior and part of Östen Jorundsson's company during the 10th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 985, while camped at Fyrisvellir, Alferth was threatened by Skarpe for laughing at him for believing the tale of Hrólfr Kraki scattering gold across the field. Before things could escalate, however, Östen reminded them that there would be no in-fighting until Eric the Victorious dismissed them.[1] While at the camp, Alferth and other warriors were chosen by the skald and Swedish Hidden One Thorvald Hjaltason to be part of his secret mission for King Eric.[2]

Having built a palisade at Lake Mälaren under Thorvald's orders, Alferth followed Östen's lead placing snares within Mirkwood and lacing them with a deadly poison. While some of Styrbjörn the Strong's warriors fell victim to their traps, Alferth joined Östen on some attack and flee tactics to lessen their numbers. However, their tactics spurred Styrbjörn and the Jomsvikings to attack. While Östen's party held their own, Styrbjörn managed to easily kill two of his men. When Alferth came to attack, he suffered the same quick fate and died by Styrbjörn's axe. Following Alferth's death, Östen ordered his men to retreat.[3][4]
