Hrólfr Kraki
Hrólfr Kraki was a semi-legendary Danish king from the 6th century who was said to have scattered gold across the Fyrisvellir plains as a distraction for the pursuing forces of King Eadgils to enable his escape.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In the late 9th century, the Raven Clan scout Norvid offered a sword alleged to be Skofnung, the personal short blade of Hrólfr Kraki, as a prize during a Sigrblot festival, where it was obtained by Eivor Varinsdottir.[1]
In 985, in the lead-up to the Battle of Fýrisvellir, Östen Jorundsson and Alferth were approached at their campfire by Skarpe, who had been rummaging in the Fyrisvellir mud for coins, which led Alferth to dismiss him as a fool. Skarpe, however, was adamant that King Eadgils could not have gotten every piece of gold that Hrólfr had thrown. Östen stepped in before their infighting could escalate.[2]
Days later, while crossing Fyrisvellir to assassinate Styrbjörn the Strong, the Hidden One Thorvald Hjaltason found a piece of hack-gold in the dirt and considered that there may indeed have been some truth to the legend before realizing that Hrólfr's ploy could be useful for his own strategy. He then coated several Arab dirhams in poison to use against Styrbjörn's army.[3]
