Aldrich was an Anglo-Saxon thegn who lived in Colcestre in the 9th century. One of the frequent guests of Ealdorman Birstan, Aldrich was one of the thegns who belittled the ealdorman for his lack of professionalism and expertise at his duty.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Little is known about his past, yet Aldrich was one of three thegns of Essexe, under the leadership of Birstan.[1]

In 875, at the Ealdorman's House, a gathering of thegns were waiting for their ealdorman, Birstan. Aldrich was calming down Eadred and Wyatt, who stated he and the other lords were waiting for Birstan and that the ale was running out. After the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir saved the ealdorman and brought him back from a bear attack, Aldrich and the other thegns started to push Birstan on his thoughts of their current dilemmas.[1]

Aldrich asked Birstan about how to deal with the constant supply of infantry for Alfred's cause and Birstan responded with the aid of Eivor's advice. After hearing no real answers, Aldrich and the other thegns insulted Birstan for being a hopeless ealdorman and Birstan quickly told them to leave from his house.[1]

Aldrich can be seen at the party of Birstan's, who welcomed Alfida, his lost sweetheart, into his home, after his wife, Estrid, was recently "kidnapped" from the Lammas festival.[2]
