Olympia, Elis

Elis is a regional unit of Greece, geographically situated in the Peloponnese but administered as part of the Western Greece region.

In Elis, lay the Sanctuary of Oympia which was home to the Temple of Zeus which in turn housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Statue of Zeus.[1] Apart from this, the sanctuary also hosted the Olympic Games every four years, producing champions such as Kyros of Zarax,[2], and throughout the 5th century BCE, Elis's economy revolved around training athletes for this event and hosting it. The region did not have a sizable population, but it received a hefty amount of visits from athletes and tourists year-round.[1]

Geography

Elis is the westernmost region of the Peloponnese peninsula. Its terrain is marked by vast swamps.[1]
