"One half without the other is nothing at all. I have nothing left to lose."
―Deianeira[src]

Deianeira (died 420s BCE) was a Boeotian mercenary, a champion, and a member of the Heroes of the Cult branch of the Cult of Kosmos during the Peloponnesian War. She was also the cousin of Astra.

Biography

In their time, the Champions of Boeotia inspired people across the nation. Songs were sung in their name. Now, the Champions were abominations who frightened and terrorized any who opposed them - even Boeotia’s own people. At the center of that terror stood Deianeira, the fiercest fighter Kosmos had ever known. So long as she fought, Boeotia would stand.

Along with three other Boeotian champions, Drakon, Aristaios and Nesaia, Deianeira was a keen defender of Boeotia, who allied with Athens' Delian League. She was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who aided her stepbrother Stentor in conquering Boeotia.[1]

At some point, Deianeira sent a letter to Okytos, a fellow member of the Heroes of the Cult branch, bemoaning the fact that the leader of Boeotia was a coward, and bragging about getting a mace "just like our Sage."[2]

Following Astra's death, Deianeira recovered her corpse and brought it back to her dwelling within the depths of the Cave of the Oracle in the Reborn Hills, and sat beside it in grief.[3]

Trivia

  • Deianeira shares her name with the mythological Deianeira, a Calydonian princess who was the third wife of Herakles, and ultimately his unwitting murderer, killing him with the poisoned tunic of the centaur Nessus.
  • The name itself means 'man-destroyer' or 'destroyer of her husband'.
