Aelwyn was an Anglo-Saxon girl from Wincestre who served as an apprentice, spy, and thief for the Order of the Ancients member Hilda during the 9th century. She was a sister of Wigbert who worked alongside her for Hilda.

Biography

Aelwyn's first years are unknown, but as a young orphan girl, Aelwyn was found and then put to work for The Quill, who sympathized with the young girl. Like The Quill's former work, Aelwyn was used as one of many children, who gathered knowledge by either stealing or spying all around Wincestre. Along her new way of life, Aelwyn worked closely with Wigbert, her brother.[1]

Two children, Aelwyn and Wigbert, were caught, setting a haystack aflame. Both Aelwyn and Wigbert were then chased by Anglo-Saxon soldiers as Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan made sure to follow them to find out what they know about The Quill. Once Eivor found the children, Aelwyn was met by her brother, Wigbert, who was shocked to see the Dane in front of him. Before any questions, Aelwyn was interrogated by two of The Quill's thugs and demanded from Aelwyn to give back what she took.[1]

After Eivor dealt with the thugs, Aelwyn stated that the thugs were from The Quill and that both children survived The Quill's clutches. Aelwyn later told Wigbert to give the item he stole to Eivor. The item was a key to the underground sewers and this, unintentionally, gave the location and final clue to the true identity of The Quill, Hilda. Before Eivor left, Aelwyn wished good luck.[1]

Within the underground sewers, a set table was made inside an empty corridor. As Eivor looked around, Aelwyn caught Eivor off-guard by mocking her from above. Aelwyn and her mentor, Hilda, watched Eivor from above as Eivor walked into an ambush. Aelwyn and Hilda looked down at the Dane as Eivor insulted Hilda for her obscene manner of taking advantage of children to do her work. Within the ambush, Aelwyn disappeared from the combat as Eivor attacked and assassinated Hilda within the failed ambush.[1]

After Eivor defeated Hilda, Aelwyn eventually went in hiding asking her brother to join her, which he refused.[2]
