Statue of Hades with Cerberus in Elis

Cerberus is the mythological hound of Hades, set to guard the Greek underworld to prevent the dead from fleeing back to the land of the living. He is often depicted with three heads, along with a snake for a tail.

One of Herakles' twelve labours was to catch Cerberus.

During the Peloponnesian War a triplet of brothers called themselves the Cerberus on the island of Kos.[1]

The Spartan misthios Kassandra found sails and finery bearing the depiction of Cerberus' heads for the ship Adrestia in the sunken depths of Pavlopetri.[1]
