The Roman Fort Ruins were a ruined complex in al-Ula Valley's eastern half of its Northern Wilds. In the 860s, it served as the stronghold of the robbers commanded by the merchant Nimlot.

History[edit | edit source]

In 106 CE, the Nabataean Kingdom entered a succession crisis following King Rabbel II Soter's death in 106 CE without royal issue. Rather than recognize any claimants to the throne, Emperor Trajan sent the Roman army to invade and militarily annex the territory, converting it into the Roman province of Arabia Petraea.[1] A detachment of soldiers from Cyrenaica's Legio III later established a garrison at Hegra to protect and collect charges along the Incense Road. As the probable southernmost inland fortified post in the Empire, it withstood both nomadic raids and threats from the Parthians for many centuries.[2]

By 860s, it had been long abandoned, and the robbers quickly occupied the place, keeping tight control over who could enter by requiring a bone whistle signal from someone standing at a precise point marked by their symbol.[3] Around the same time, the Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq learned his father Ishaq ibn Khalid had been kidnapped and was held at the ruins. Infiltrating the compound[4] using a whistle he acquired from the Robbers' North Outpost,[3] Basim made his way to the inner tower where Nimlot had locked himself in. The two men confronted each other, Nimot showing a captive Ishaq and revealing himself as Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob's son who wished to kill Ishaq while Basim watched, mirroring the moment where Nimlot could only watch as the Hidden One slew Mas'ood. Nimlot then charged at Ishaq with a sword, but Basim intercepted and killed him before he could harm Ishaq. Taking Nimlot's weapon with him, Basim exfiltrated himself and Ishaq from the stronghold.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Roman Fort Ruins are a fictional landmark created for Valley of Memory, the 2025 downloadable expansion for the video game Assassin's Creed: Mirage (2023). In the expansion's release on 18 November 2025 with Update 1.1.0, this landmark was originally named "Roman Fort". It was renamed to "Roman Fort Ruins" on 17 December with Update 1.1.1. The patch notes retained the original name but miscategorized it as the quest "Roman Fort", despite being part of the expansion's final main memory "In the Vulture's Nest".[5]
